Take control over your personal style and feel fabulous and confident!
Do you know what color schema you should be wearing, or not wearing? Or which body shape you are and how to dress yourself in the most flattering? Many women, including myself, do not always necessarily know what to wear to make them look their best – which is where Urban Girl Squad comes in!
The fabulous founder of UGS, Amanda Hofman, created a social networking group which brings women in the city (New York) together by the means of interesting events and meetups. Being difficult to meet other young women, this group has been a great success and has been rapidly growing momentum.
Fortunately, I was able to partake in the Urban Girl Squad’s last event, “Your Personal Guide to Style: A Night with Your Stylist”. The event was hosted at the beautiful Ava Penthouse Lounge, where they brought in a stylist to speak to the ladies. Silfath Pinto is and Image Consultant, originating from Paris and received her education from the Fashion Institute of Technology. While Silfath might tell you ‘what not to wear’ she is no Stacey or Clinton and is kind and encouraging (and doesn’t throw away all your clothes!) Instead, she will help you find what flatters you while working with clothes and accessories you already have, as well as suggesting new articles to add to your closet.
The main emphasis on the evening was picking the right colors and the right shape for you.
The right colors
There are two important things when choosing which colors you should wear, and that is temperature and intensity. Temperature refers to ‘cool’ or ‘warm’ colors, whereas intensity refers to how vibrant the colors are.
Cool colors would be things like blues, greens, violets, black, grey, pink(that has a blue undertone) and silver for jewelry.
Warm colors would be things like red, oranges, yellow, brown, and gold for jewelry.
The intensity would still be considering the same colors, but would be either more muted for a ’soft’ intensity or have a lot of pigment for a ‘bright’ intensity.
How do I know which color scheme I am?
If you aren’t sure which category you fall under, you can do a test – drape yourself in a strong warm and then strong cool piece of fabric (such as silver and gold, or blue and red). Have your friend stand back and it should be almost immediate to them which color suits your skintone best!
The most interesting thing I found was that, cool coloring does not necessarily mean blonde hair, blue eyes and fair skin, and warm does not have to mean olive complexion and dark hair. It was astonishing to see women who seemingly look very different be in the same category.
If you are a cool tone for example, but love to wear golds or browns, that does not mean you can’t wear them anymore. It simply means you must be more careful in your choices and pair the warm colors with a cooler color to balance things out. Wearing a gold necklace but with a navy blue dress is still okay!
While it is a good idea to follow these guidelines, it is also important to feel comfortable in what you are wearing! Dress appropriately to your profession (at least during the day!) and always feel free to add in your own style and personality into your wardrobe!
Silfath is also available to consult you on your existing wardrobe, or meet you at a store of your choice to help walk you through what you should be wearing to look and feel your best!
